„Where Stories Unfold“ je žánrově obtížně uchopitelná deska.
Duety s hostem Mario Plackem z personálně spřízněných Visions Of Atlantis přichází jako osvěžující prvek v momentech, kdy mé ucho, navyklé přívalu hrubozrnného growlingu, začalo pociťovat únavu, a aranže sólového zpěvu a sborů nemají chybu – klobouk dolů před hlavním skladatelem Luki Knoeblem.
„Where Stories Unfold“ doporučuji jako učebnici moderního symfonického (a snad i gothic) metalu, která těží maximum ze své svobodomyslnosti a nezatěžkanosti žánrovými mantinely, pro mainstreamového fanouška „female fronted metalu“ může nicméně být obtížně skousnutelná, protože momentů, kdy vás muzika vyzývá zpívat si se zpěvačkou tu mnoho nenajdete.
ENGLISH VERSION
Austrian symphonic metal outfit Illuminata is a proof that DIY model of music production is viable and is capable of generating surprisingly classy albums. Keeping total control over all aspects of recording process doesn’t always work for the music bands, however, in this case indisputable musical talent goes hand in hand with extraordinary portion of marketing and management skills. The new album “Where Stories Unfold”, which was released at the beginning of 2015, was partially financed by an elaborate crowd-funding campaign that led to inviting Prague Film Orchestra to record the orchestral parts.
“Where Stories Unfold” is uneasy to categorize and label with a genre. The band itself suggest using “cinematic metal” as a tag that compares this music endeavour to a music score accompanying a movie. This might sound a bit odd when you only listen to individual songs, but if you indulge in the one-hour-long journey, an epiphany will come. The record is a blend of gothic metal, power metal, pompous symphonic rock/metal and metal ballad, with tight coherence in its complexity. The album builds moods, changes tempos, escalates and falls, crushes with double bass drum beats (Tom is an amazing drummer!) and soothes with brilliantly conceived orchestral parts. None of the songs is an utter smash hit, but in this case it is definitely not a pitfall but a natural result of writing an album as a music score rather than the now-popular “two blockbuster and ten fillers” approach.
A very specific and distinct aspect of the album are Katarzyna Nieniewska’s vocals. She is definitely not a match to technical virtuosity of the top-notch female vocal performers, but her versatility is astonishing. Instead of attempting to hit highest notes ever, her singing focuses more on building emotions (Phoenix), shows uncanny subtle fragility (Entwined) and even throws burlesque frivolity in the pool (Danse Macabre). Another thing I appreaciate is that the sound guy did not cover the vocals with veils of special effects or choir arrangements; the vocal parts are unrestrained, direct, vivid and believable. Duets with the special guest Mario Plack come as a refreshing moment just when my ears, normally accustomed to listening to rough guttural growling, become a bit tired, and last but not least, the collaboration of solo vocal and choirs are flawless – kudos to Luki Knoebl, the main composer!
I totally recommend “Where Stories Unfold” as a guidebook to modern metal music songwriting, which makes the most out of its free-minded spirit and, in its very own way, completely ignores the limitations and boundaries of genre labels. However, the album might get a bit difficult to digest for a mainstream listener, as it lacks strong sing-along moments (and thanks god it does!)
