G.E.N: No Ink For A Self Portrait

Chilská kapela G.E.N má za sebou 4 roky existence a dlouhohrající deska "No Ink For A Self Portrait" je zatím jejich jediný dlouhohrající počin. Kapela, která sama sebe charakterizuje jako post-doom, a která podle vlastních slov klade důraz na divadelnost svých živých vystoupení, uvádí jako zdroje své inspirace (mimo jiné) kapely My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost či Anathema, čímž sama sebe definuje jako doom-metalovou kapelu, ale také vzbuzuje otázku, zda má ve srovnání s kulty  britské doom metalové scény co nabídnout. A k mému údivu: má!

Artwork desky je ve své minimaličnosti velmi příhodný, psací stroj a oblak cigaretového dýmu jako by ladil violu co možno nejhlouběji, a úvodní akustické intro ke skladbě "Monologue of an Isolated Man Pt.1" budiž kantilénou, která se snáší na pošmourný zimní večer. Lehce zastřený čistý vokál temným murmurem lamentuje do střídavě zběsilé a snivé kytarové peozie a kde kapela tlačí na pilu, přechází do afektovaného řevu, a kde se kapela zasmuší v akustické vyhrávce, podložené tichými a apatickými hradbami kláves, tam šeptá a naléhá na posluchačův soucit bez potřeby rozumět slovům, kterými promlouvá.

Podobně pokračuje i "Shadow Of Light", zpěvák Andres Munster předvádí vynikající práci s kontrasty, střídá polohy a nálady, prostřednictvím nichž jakoby vzdával hold těm, kteří si svou slávu už dávno vydobyli: jako bych slyšel po kousku Nicka Holmese, Aarona Stainthorpa, Johana Edlunda či Raymonda Rohonyi, z českých zpěváku slyším talent Radka Popela. Není to ale jen vokál, který táhne desku vpřed, oceňuji propracovanou souhru dvou kytar, dlouhá, předlouhá sóla, která i přes délku blížící se ke dvěma minutám nezní samoúčelně, i kompozici skladeb, která se na hony vyhýbá zprofanovanému "sloka-refrén-sloka-refrén-bridge...."

Post-doom dýchá z každého tónu, deska je žánrově sevřená a důsledná, i přestože neváhá vykročit k deathmetalové artilerii či naopak k ukňouranému patosu rockové nálady po vzoru Placebo - a nebo možná právě proto. Zvuková nejednoznačnost mi při třetím, možná čtvrtém poslechu přišla vysloveně dráždivá, kde nastoupí drtivě zpomalené deathové kytary ála Ataraxie, tam zároveň jako by Keith Caputo kvílel své "Lost at 22". Dlouhá stopáž písní nahrává dlouhému budování emocí, někdy snad až zdlouhavému, ale velmi účinnému, prakticky každá píseń mě nutí přivírat oči a zaklánět hlavu.

"No Ink For A Self Portrait" je vynikající deska, která skoro jistě mine "mainstreamová" metalová media a pozornosti se jí dostane pouze u úzkého okruhu posluchačů. Je to velká škoda, protože je to velmi zdařilé, promyšlené a nadčasové dílo, ke kterému se budu rád vracet.

Chillan band G.E.N has been active for four years and the full-length album „No Ink For A Self Portrait“ is the only full length release so far. The band characterizes itself as post doom metal and, using their own words, focuses a lot on theatrical performance of their music. Among their sources of inspiration, My Dying bride, Paradise Lost or Anathema are listed, so the affiliation of the band to the doom metal genre is more than logical, and my question was there was anything to offer in direct comparison with the grandmasters of the genre – and my answer hell yes!

The cover artwork of the CD is significantly minimalistic, which fits the content like a glove, the image of an old-fashioned typewriter and a cloud of tobacco smoke triggers the feeling of lonely, darkened nights in abandoned neighborhood. The acoustic intro to the first track, „Monologue of an Isolated Man Pt.1, contributes to the alienated atmosphere furthermore, and then a slightly blear vocal murmurs and laments to accompany the alternating passages of pure guitar poetry and fury, and in the moments the band starts raging, the vocal Shift into mincing roar and when the band darkens into acoustic solos, underlaid with quiet, tranquil keyboards, the vocal whispers and urges the listener’s compassion without the necessity to understand the words it uses.

„Shadow of Light“ carries on in similar fashion, the vocalist Andres Monster demonstrates phenomenal work with contrasts, changes the voice techniques and moods as if he was paying a tribute to those who have already earned their fame. It feels like having a bit of Nick Holmes, Aaron Stainthorpe, Johan Edmund and Raymond Rohonyi merged into one unique talent. However, there is so much more than just the vocal, I do appreciate the elaborate accordance of both guitars, long solos that reach the length of two minutes, and yet sound not even close to purposeless fillers. I also do appreciate the composition of tracks that avoids the notorious structure patterns so common with mainstream rock/metal music.

Post doom seems to be the uniting principle of the whole album, the album sounds so consistent and dense, even though the band used highly contrasting techniques, such as death metal artillery and Placebo-like whining. This ambiguity contributes to the impression that nothing is taken for granted here, in the very moment when the guitars start a crushing death metal riff, the vocal feels like Keith Caputo’s „Lost at 22“. Long total running time of the album also contributes to slow and gradual building up of the atmosphere, which might feel a bit tedious at times, but also is so powerful that each single track made me close my eyes and lean my head backwards.

„No Ink For A Self Portrait“  is an outstanding recording that will, unfortunately earn very little attention from the mainstream metal media but will earn a lot of admiration among the die-hard fans of doom metal subgenres. It is an elaborate and timeless piece of music that I will keep returning to with great pleasure.
