Perfektní ilustrací budiž „Reichswehr In Blood“ či hned následující „The Crosses Made Of Bone“, kde se podklad žene vpřed a nad ním se líně povaluje vícehlasý refrén.
ENGLISH VERSION
I first met the band Belphegor at Brutal Assault 2005 festival and the first encounter was shattering, the late-night ride was breath-taking for many spectators who, just like me, had just a vague idea about what’s coming. At that time, Belphegor was on tour promoting their fantastic album “Goatreich – Fleshcult”, and even though their second BA appearance two years later was spoiled by horrible sound, their latest club appearance supporting Egyptologists from Nile showed that this bands has gained a considerable number of followers in the Czech Republic.
The following release “Bondage Goat Zombie” met a lot colder acclaim across the metal scene, and so their latest studio release “Walpurgis Rites – Hexenwahn” had an uneasy task to prove that the high frequency of releases did not pull the qualities of Belphegor down.
The hesitation is unfortunately still here. Smashing black/death metal attack that this band from Austria vomited upon the heavy metal world is not gone for good totally, however, despite the “black/death” label associated with this band in this review, I’m rather referring to the past, not the present of the band. The whole album is kicked off with a fiendish ride “Walpurgis Rites”, however, starting from the second track “Veneratio Diaboli – I Am Sin”, medium-paced and more epic attitude is taking over, outnumbering the speed and fury. More careful listening shows that even the slow parts are not exactly unnatural and the melody and arrangements are, even with just a touch of keyboards, almost symphonic in their nature. All of this results into a crossover of black metal aggression that still dwells in this record in the lyrical concept, and dense death metal layer which revolves among doomy atmosphere, Gothenburg melodic metal and double-kick driven unholy machine. Perfect illustrations of what I mean are tracks “Reichswehr In Blood” and “The Crosses Made Of Bone”, where the background storms ahead and the multi-layered chorus crawls above it like a grey cloud.
The track “Der Geistertreiber” can be considered experimental due to a number of samples used throughout it and spoken vocals, which sound a dissonant to me, however, I rate them high just because there’s nothing else to say about the song. Switching from fast to medium-paced parts is at this point expectable and starts dragging the tension down, and inevitably I am forced to play the old albums to check what was so special about them. The musical crossover is growing tired by the end of the recording – instead of a clear development to either side, the songs gallop in between, and even though the particular songs sound good (also thanks to clear and readable sound), the overall impression is grey – which is also supported by the final piece “Hexenwahn – Totenkult”, which is nothing than a calculated boredom.
This recording is in a way better than “Bondage Goat Zombie”. It is certainly better from the point of view of Nuclear Blast, because there is nothing revolutionary or shocking that could spoil the sales figures. On the other hand, it isn’t good for the fans of their early work. This is also why the rating is so low – the recording itself is good, but in the context of Belphegor’s career, this is significantly below the average.
